Senior Night
Friday, October 22nd
The astounding class of 2005 and their parents were paid tribute in a short ceremony prior to the Georgetown game. Here is the text of that tribute, as delivered by Brad Cone that night:
Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we honor a special class of student-athletes. Four years ago, while watching the seniors of 2002 win the 2001 district football championship, they nearly ran the table with a tremendous freshman team that gave us a hint at what they’ve accomplished so far this year. There were nearly 50 of them then. But this is a rugged sport and over time, it takes its toll. Those you’ll see before you are the only ones left.
To maintain the necessary balance of sports, academics, social life, family, and work requires an impressive amount of dedication. These young men deserve our high regard tonight.
Most of these players have been strapping on the pads since the pads weighed more than they did, back when they wobbled down a sixty-yard field looking like nothing but a huge helmet with cleats sticking out. Think back for a moment to those long-gone days, moms and dads. For tonight, your sons will take this field as the home team for the last time in their lives.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Seniors of 2005!
(Here, the players and accompanying parents or family members were intrduced.)
They’re living perhaps the earliest-encountered and most-attainable of American dreams of youth: to become a Friday Night warrior. And while few of these young men will ever walk away from a football field with gigantic trophies or gigantic paychecks, they are nonetheless – every one of them – heroes to those who’ve been at their sides for years, and who are again at this moment sharing their day in the sun, and their night in the lights.
Let’s hear it for these special student-athletes on a job extremely well done. Thank you gentlemen, very, very much.
