180 Days of Reign

In the 2004-2005 school year, the Timberwolves Ruled Supreme

The UIL sponsors 17 athletic teams in Texas high schools. Eight of these participate in what’s called “team sports,” where the team’s success is not measured by individual successes, but by team scores as a whole. These eight are:

The other nine teams participate in “individual sports”, where a single athlete can advance on their own, regardless of their team’s cumulative scores. These nine are:

In 2004-2005, Cedar Park High School won seven district championships in these seventeen sports, far more than any other school in 15-5A.

A brief walk through this amazing year...

Cedar Park won 63% of all available district 15-5A team championships in 2004-2005, and those teams won over 88% of their district games! The overall district record of these teams was an astounding 78-14. Of the other seven schools in district 15-5A, three of them won one team title apiece. Georgetown (women’s basketball), Pflugerville (men’s basketball), and Round Rock (softball) won the only other 15-5A team championships.

Individual Sports
Cedar Park also did very well in individual sports, winning two more district crowns and adding two more runners-up and a third place finish...

Plus, there were individual Regional Meet qualifiers from Men’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf, Men’s track, Tennis, and Women’s Track. Wrestling and Women’s Cross Country produced State Meet qualifiers. Scattered throughout these sports were many individual district 15-5A champions, athletes who bested all league competition at their specific event.

Is This Anything New, Really?
No. Evidence indicates that, except for the degree to which it was extended in 2004-2005, winning district athletic titles at Cedar Park is certainly no new trend. The last title won in the most recent athletic year – baseball – was the 35th in the short history of Cedar Park district athletic competition, which spans seven years in some sports, six in others. That’s an average of just over five district titles per year. No other school in the Austin area – at any level – has produced championship athletic teams at this rate during this time period. The Eyes of Texas are Upon Us...
This continuing athletic success has fueled Cedar Park’s outstanding performances in the Texas-wide UIL Lone Star Cup competition, where the extra-curricular success of all schools in the state are measured against each other. CPHS has one runner-up finish (2001-2002), a fourth place finish (2003-2004), and a fifth-place finish (2004-2005), while each time competing against over two hundred schools across the state. CPHS is the only school in its district with such a record of success in this state-wide competition.
