Season Summary
Going in,
2005 was supposed by many to be a rebuilding year. It was the first year in
Cedar Park for new head coach Chris Ross. Only eleven lettermen and four starters
returned. Only 15 rushing yards and 37 passing yards from 2004’s prodigious
totals returned. Only three starters were back from the 3rd-ranked 5A defense
in Texas.
But the team got off with a bang, posting the best performance in a season-opener in school history, absolutely dismantling a good Harker Heights team 35-0 with the KVET radio crew broadcasting the game all over Texas. Quarterback Travis Watson tied the school record for most TD passes in a game in his first varsity start.
By the Ellison game, Watson had already become the third-leading passer in CP history, and the 2005 T'wolves entered district play with a winning record for the first time since 2001. But a lackluster second-half performance against a sub-par Westwood team opened district with a surprise loss.
Staying true to the template for seasons played by young teams, the T’wolves rebounded with their best game to date in a thoroughly dominating 24-0 win over district contender McNeil.
A disappointing loss to suddenly resurgent Stony Point revealed the fact that three of the highest passing yardage totals ever surrended had occurred in the previous five games.
In game six, Round Rock took a 3-0 lead, the first time the opponent had scored first all season, on their way to an unexpected 21-7 upset of the T'wolves. It was the Dragons' first win in five games.
The last four games saw some stellar performances by Cedar Park, in a strong finish to Coach Ross' first season.
Great offense returned against P’ville, but the Panther O rang up a record yardage number on the CPD in a close high scoring Timberwolf loss.
Tyler Smith ran roughshod over the individual per-game rushing records in a road win over Georgetown, taking four records from his brother Quinton.
The ultimate prize of the season was a shutout win at home over arch-rival and previously undefeated Leander, keeping the tenth-ranked Lions from completing the first unbeaten regular season in LISD history. It was the second consecutive season Cedar Park had shut out three opponents.
On the minus side, only two of the teams to beat the Timberwolves would actually end up with better records than Cedar Park. But on the plus side, four Timberwolf victims were playoff teams. The 2005 team became the first team ever at Cedar Park to win their last two games in a row.
